dsi has been providing high-quality bare printed circuit boards and contract electronic manufacturing support to our customers for over three decades. Incorporated in 1973, by Stan Bentley, President, and Dave Jessup, Vice President of Operations, dsi began as a design and engineering service company. By 1980, dsi had created the structure of a vertically integrated electronic manufacturing company offering product design, printed circuit board fabrication (PCD), and assembly of products that dsi designed. Today the ownership remains with the two original founders. |
The Custom Products Division (CPD) was established in the early 1980s as a true contract assembler to assemble product not designed by dsi. The Custom Products Division ventured into surface mount technology in the late 1980s with one MyData TP-9. CPD now runs three shifts in SMT, has multiple automated lines for our high-mix, prototype to medium-volume product, and in early 2000 installed two very high-volume automotive SMT product lines.
dsi 's Printed Circuit Division (PCD) continued to quietly grow during the 1980s and 1990s to become one of the leading suppliers of high technology boards in the Midwest. While dsi manufactures almost all of the boards assembled by the Custom Products Division, it still sells over 80% of the boards manufactured on the merchant market.
In 1995, dsi purchased the former Ransburg campus which allowed all operations to be centralized in 250,000 square feet under one roof. The new facility was completely renovated specifically to serve as a high technology electronic manufacturing operation. With the new facility, dsi implemented a new marketing concept named "Rapid." The Rapid Prototype Division (RPT) was conceived as a marketing tool for companies concerned with time to market. The new division grew quickly and became a key part of dsi 's success. dsi 's RPT division turns bare boards in as few as 24 hours and assembled boards in as few as 3 to 5 business days. All RPT product is made to production quality standards (including ISO/TS 16949:2002, ISO 9001:2000, FDA, and Automotive Underhood), and is run on the same lines as production product.
dsi 's offerings set it apart from the competition early on. Typically, one company manufactures the boards and another assembles them, but dsi does both under one roof. We provide synchronized systems from conception of the product (if desired) to the full box build in one facility with networked systems and a full technical staff.
Innovation has long been the hallmark of dsi. Most of our divisions do not look like their industry competitors. Our process lines are custom designed, our systems are networked and linked, and creativity is encouraged. We continue to invest in improvements that will provide innovative solutions to meet our customers' evolving needs.
