dsi
has two stockroom areas to support our production and pre-production.
Production Stockroom
dsi stocks over 30,000 different components
to meet the needs of our customers.
- The production
stockroom provides a controlled environment for all materials,
protecting them from ESD, moisture and temperature fluctuations.
-
All through-hole and surface mount materials are secured within
a 1000 square foot area to maintain inventory control. Within
this fenced area, we have four automated storage handling units
that store our surface mount material. This automated equipment
lets us quickly pull jobs, scan materials for a job, and route
them to the production floor.
-
The production stockroom is staffed by three shifts so that we
can support customer needs day and night.
-
Materials enter through receiving inspection where lot traceability is assigned.
Receiving verifies that the materials match the customer's AVL listing before materials are moved into the
stockroom for storage.
-
Manufacturing orders are released to the floor by the production
scheduler. Orders are assigned a priority and materials are pulled
by priority across all shifts to support continuous material flow
to floor.
-
The stockroom pulls materials by using a first-in/first-out (FIFO)
system and scans from the barcoded lot traceability on the material.
The jobs are then kitted, the materials are scanned and picked
from the MRP system, and the jobs are moved to WIP (work in process).
After a job has run, all remaining materials and reels are returned
to the stockroom and cycle counted back into the MRP system.
-
Scrap is captured at this time. This type of cycle counting helps
ensure that inventory records of on-hand material are 100% accurate.

dsi offers customized material management programs for customer-supplied
materials and provides reports to help support customer needs. Special programs
can be discussed upon request from Project Management.
Pre-Production Stockroom (PPS)
The pre-production stockroom also provides a controlled environment for
storing materials. However, the pre-production stockroom is different from
the production stockroom because it works with much smaller jobs and set-ups.
The materials stored in this storeroom are not part of our MRP system so
careful attention is paid to checking in materials for accuracy and counting
to make sure we have what is needed. This information is maintained in a
database and given to the project managers. The PPS stockroom supports the Customer Products Division and Rapid Prototyping Division of our business. Materials are usually returned to the customer after a run unless another pre-production run is scheduled soon after the first one. |
